What makes Bath a special place to make a home?
Bath is a city with deep historical roots and striking architecture. Located in Somerset, it has drawn visitors for centuries, first for its natural hot springs and later for its social and cultural life. Its origins go back to Roman times, when the settlement was known as Aquae Sulis. The Romans built a grand complex of baths and a temple dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, combining native British beliefs with Roman ones. Today, the Roman Baths remain one of the city’s most visited attractions. Visitors can explore the well-preserved remains, including the Great Bath and various artefacts uncovered during excavation.
During the 18th century, Bath experienced a major transformation. It became one of Britain’s most fashionable spa towns, attracting aristocrats and wealthy visitors. This era shaped much of the city’s appearance, thanks to architects like John Wood the Elder and his son, who designed many of its iconic buildings. The Royal Crescent stands as a prime example of Georgian luxury, with its sweeping curve of terraced houses overlooking a green lawn. Nearby, the Circus forms a perfect circle of townhouses inspired by ancient Roman design. Another highlight is Pulteney Bridge, which crosses the River Avon and is lined with shops—one of only a few such bridges in the world.
Bath also has strong literary links, most notably with Jane Austen. She lived in the city between 1801 and 1806, a time that influenced her novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. The Jane Austen Centre on Gay Street offers insights into her time in Bath and explores the wider social world of the period. Fans of her work can walk the same streets and recognise the settings described in her fiction.
At the heart of the city stands Bath Abbey, a place of worship for over a thousand years. The current building, dating mostly from the 16th century, is known for its fan-vaulted ceiling, tall windows, and carved stone angels climbing Jacob’s Ladder on the west front. Visitors can climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city and surrounding hills.
Bath’s museums add to its cultural appeal. The Holburne Museum, once a grand hotel, holds collections of fine and decorative art. No. 1 Royal Crescent shows what life was like in a Georgian townhouse, furnished as it would have been in the 18th century. The Victoria Art Gallery offers a mix of historical and contemporary works and is free to enter. Though currently relocating, the Fashion Museum has long been a draw for those interested in clothing from past centuries to the present day.
The city is set in a green valley, with wooded hills all around. The Bath Skyline Walk gives a chance to enjoy sweeping views, taking in fields, meadows, and hidden woodland paths. Inside the city, Royal Victoria Park provides open space for picnics, a lake for boating, and areas for children to play.
Today, Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for the way its Roman and Georgian histories are preserved side by side. Its streets remain full of life, with independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafes tucked into historic buildings. The tradition of bathing continues too—modern visitors can relax at Thermae Bath Spa, which uses the same hot springs the Romans did.
